How much does donor sperm cost?
What 15 US sperm banks post as their own prices, side by side: the vial, by donor type and preparation, plus shipping, donor profiles and storage, and what one insemination costs all in.
- Updated monthly · checked 18 h ago
One vial of donor sperm for an IUI costs $1,060–$2,500 at 12 of the 13 US sperm banks that post a fixed price, and $675 at BioGenetics. Discounted donors cost less: from $595 at Fairfax Cryobank and $897 for California Cryobank's core-collection open or anonymous donors. Shipping to your clinic adds $200–$500 per order, so one natural-cycle IUI attempt with one vial runs about $1,870–$4,396 all in. Most families need several: banks report 3 to 4 insemination cycles per pregnancy on average.

The standard vial is one regular IUI vial from a current donor at full price: the ID release donor's price where a bank prices by identity, and the price most donor pages carry where it prices each donor. The lowest-priced vial can be a discounted or older donor, a quantity price, or a lower-count A.R.T. vial with fewer motile sperm. A "from" price is the bank's posted starting price. Shipping is the lowest regular rate a bank posts to a clinic in the continental US.

The clinic fee is the cited range on our IUI cost page (Center for Reproduction (IUI cost breakdown)); a cycle with oral medication costs $1,000–$2,000 at the clinic instead. Usually one vial per insemination, or two lower-count A.R.T. vials (Fairfax Cryobank's guidance for home insemination), and more than one attempt per pregnancy: California Cryobank says families take four insemination cycles on average, Xytex cites national averages of 3 to 4, and Seattle Sperm Bank says families buy 3 or more vials per pregnancy. (Sources: Fairfax Cryobank, California Cryobank, Xytex, Seattle Sperm Bank.)
What changes the price of a vial
IUI or ICI vial. An IUI vial is washed so a clinician can place it straight into the uterus; an ICI vial is unwashed, for insemination at the cervix (often at home), and has to be processed before an IUI. (Sources: Cascade Cryobank, California Cryobank.) 8 of the banks that price both charge the same for each; Cryobio charges $1,020 for ICI against $1,170 for IUI.
The donor's identity terms. An ID release donor agrees to share his identity with the child at 18. At some banks that costs more: California Cryobank $897 for an open or anonymous donor and $1,897 for an ID release donor; Cascade Cryobank $1,700 for an ID release donor and $2,300 for an early disclosure donor; CryoGam $685 for an anonymous donor and $1,060 for an ID release donor; Fairfax Cryobank $2,095 for an anonymous donor and $2,195 for an ID release donor. Others charge one price for every donor (Cryobio, Cryomate, MySpermBank, Seattle Sperm Bank, Sperm Bank Inc. and The World Egg and Sperm Bank), and every current donor at The Sperm Bank of California and Xytex is ID release.
Newer or discounted donors. Several banks price donors by collection or run discounts: California Cryobank's latest releases cost more than its core collection, and Fairfax Cryobank rotates a group of discounted "Advantage" donors. Quantity prices lower the cost per vial at BioGenetics, CryoGam and Cryomate.
How many motile sperm a vial holds. Most banks put 10 million motile sperm in a standard IUI vial; standards start at 5 million at CryoGam and MySpermBank. Lower-count A.R.T. vials cost less because they hold fewer: Fairfax Cryobank recommends two of them for a home insemination, Cascade Cryobank advises asking your doctor before buying them, and Seattle Sperm Bank says they are not well suited to home insemination.

Common questions about donor sperm cost
How much does donor sperm cost?
One standard IUI vial costs $1,060 to $2,500 at 12 of the 13 US sperm banks that post a fixed price, and $675 at BioGenetics. Discounted donors and older collections cost less, from $595 at Fairfax Cryobank. Shipping to a clinic adds $200 to $500 per order, so one natural-cycle IUI attempt with one vial comes to about $1,870 to $4,396 all in, using a clinic fee of $500 to $1,500. These are each bank's own posted prices, read on 2026-10-07.
How much is a vial of sperm for IUI?
$1,060 to $2,500 at 12 of the 13 banks with a fixed price, for one vial at the bank's standard IUI count (usually 10 million motile sperm). An IUI vial is washed so a clinician can place it straight into the uterus; an ICI vial is unwashed, for insemination at the cervix (often at home), and has to be processed before an IUI. 8 of the banks that price both charge the same for an IUI and an ICI vial; Cryobio charges $1,020 for ICI against $1,170 for IUI.
Does an ID release (open identity) donor cost more?
At some banks. California Cryobank $897 for an open or anonymous donor and $1,897 for an ID release donor; Cascade Cryobank $1,700 for an ID release donor and $2,300 for an early disclosure donor; CryoGam $685 for an anonymous donor and $1,060 for an ID release donor; Fairfax Cryobank $2,095 for an anonymous donor and $2,195 for an ID release donor. Cryobio, Cryomate, MySpermBank, Seattle Sperm Bank, Sperm Bank Inc. and The World Egg and Sperm Bank charge the same whatever the donor's identity terms, and every current donor at The Sperm Bank of California and Xytex is ID release.
How many vials of donor sperm should I buy?
Usually one vial per insemination, or two lower-count A.R.T. vials (Fairfax Cryobank's guidance for home insemination), and more than one attempt per pregnancy: California Cryobank says families take four insemination cycles on average, Xytex cites national averages of 3 to 4, and Seattle Sperm Bank says families buy 3 or more vials per pregnancy.
What do sperm banks charge besides the vial?
Shipping ($200 to $500 per order to a clinic at the 12 banks that post it), storage if the bank keeps your vials ($300 to $600 a year), and at most banks a fee for full donor profiles; profiles are free at Cascade Cryobank, Cryomate and MySpermBank. Late tank returns, cancellations and rush orders carry fees too, and several banks buy back unused vials at 50% of the price.
Can donor sperm be shipped to my home?
Yes, at 13 of the 15 banks we checked. Several first ask for a form signed by your doctor or another licensed practitioner (Seattle Sperm Bank, Cryomate, Cryobio and The Sperm Bank of California among them), Fairfax Cryobank needs none outside New York, and some states restrict home insemination. Each bank's terms are in its entry above.
Which sperm bank is the cheapest?
For a standard IUI vial at a fixed price, BioGenetics ($675); the highest is The Sperm Bank of California ($2,500). The lowest price we found for any insemination vial is $595 (IUI or ICI Premium vial, Fairfax Advantage donor, Fairfax Cryobank). The cheapest vial is not always the cheapest attempt: banks differ in how many motile sperm they put in a vial (standards start at 5 million at CryoGam and MySpermBank, and are 10 million at most others), in shipping and in profile fees, so compare the whole order.
Does a sperm donor cost more in some states?
No. Each bank posts one price list and ships to clinics across the country; what changes by state is the clinic's fee for the insemination and, at a few banks, shipping (Seattle Sperm Bank charges less to Washington, Oregon and California). Some states restrict home insemination.
Are there grants that help pay for donor sperm?
A few. Of the 22 fertility grant programs we track, 10 name donor eggs or sperm among the costs they pay for: Baby Quest Foundation, Tinina Q. Cade Foundation Family Building Grant, Gift of Parenthood, Journey to Parenthood grant, Hopeful Mama Grant, Men Having Babies Gay Parenting Assistance Program (GPAP), Chicago Coalition for Family Building grants, Nest Egg Foundation IVF grant, BIVF Foundation Financial Assistance Grant, Stardust Fertility Foundation grant. Awards are competitive and several are limited to particular states, clinics or groups.
