Donor egg IVF uses eggs from a young, screened donor, fertilized and transferred to the intended parent who carries the pregnancy. It typically costs $23,250–$40,000 with frozen donor eggs and $35,000–$65,000 for a fresh cycle. About 53.5% of transfers lead to a live birth, and crucially that rate stays near half regardless of the recipient's age, because the eggs come from the donor, not the recipient.

Frozen donor eggs from a bank are the cheaper, faster path (no cycle to synchronize), but a cohort is only a handful of eggs; a fresh cycle yields more eggs but adds donor compensation, agency and screening, which is most of the price gap. A few budget-priced clinics advertise far lower: CNY Fertility lists a fresh donor-egg package from about $11,994 for 4 donor eggs. Success

How well does donor egg IVF work?

About 53.5% of fresh donor-egg transfers end in a live birth, and roughly half succeed across fresh and frozen. The number almost no other cost site puts in context.

The decisive fact: Success of egg donation depends on many factors but, in ASRM's words, is not considered to be related to the recipient's age: the eggs come from a young donor, and egg quality is the dominant driver of IVF success.

Because a young donor's eggs carry the age advantage, donor egg IVF is often the highest-success path for people whose own eggs are the limiting factor, including many patients over 40 and those with diminished ovarian reserve or repeated own-egg IVF failure.

Fresh and frozen donor eggs produce broadly comparable live-birth rates per transfer, with fresh historically showing a slight edge; ASRM treats both as effective options. ASRM guideline.

The CDC publishes each clinic's donor egg results: 223 US clinics published a donor egg success rate for 2022, and per transfer of frozen embryos made from donor eggs their rates run from 3.3% to 95.7%. They are listed on this page by state, and each clinic's page shows its own figures. Clinics with few donor transfers can swing a lot from year to year, so read a rate together with its cycle count.

Choose a donor and a path
Either a fresh cycle with a chosen or agency donor, or a cohort of already-frozen eggs from a donor bank. Frozen skips the step of synchronizing two people's cycles, which is why it is faster and cheaper.

Donor screening
A fresh or known donor is screened for infectious disease (including HIV, hepatitis B and C, gonorrhea, chlamydia and syphilis) plus genetic and psychological evaluation. Reputable egg banks have already completed this for frozen cohorts.

Prepare the recipient
The recipient does not take stimulation drugs. She takes estrogen to build the uterine lining, then progesterone to prepare for implantation. In a fresh cycle this is timed to the donor's retrieval; with frozen eggs it is timed to the thaw.

Fertilize and transfer
The donor eggs are fertilized with the intended father's or a donor's sperm (usually by ICSI), and one embryo is transferred to the recipient's uterus three to five days later. Extra embryos can be frozen for another attempt.

The recipient carries the pregnancy but never goes through stimulation or an egg retrieval, so her side of the process is the lining preparation and the transfer only.

How much does donor egg IVF cost?

Donor egg IVF typically costs about $23,250 to $40,000 using frozen eggs from a donor bank, and about $35,000 to $65,000 for a fresh donor cycle. The gap is mostly donor compensation, agency and screening, which a fresh cycle adds and a frozen cohort does not. A few budget-priced clinics advertise fresh donor-egg packages from as low as about $11,994 for a small number of eggs.

What is the success rate of donor egg IVF?

High. On average about 53.5% of fresh donor-egg embryo transfers result in a live birth (ASRM, from SART and CDC data), and roughly half of transfers succeed across fresh and frozen donor eggs alike. These are population averages, not a prediction for any one person, but donor eggs are one of the highest-success paths in IVF.

Does the recipient's age affect donor egg IVF success?

Very little. Success of egg donation depends on many factors but, in ASRM's words, is not considered to be related to the recipient's age: the eggs come from a young donor, and egg quality is the dominant driver of IVF success. That is the key difference from using your own eggs: own-egg live-birth rates fall from about 49.7% under 35 to about 7.7% over 40, while donor-egg success stays near half at every recipient age.

Fresh or frozen donor eggs: which is better?

Fresh and frozen donor eggs produce broadly comparable live-birth rates per transfer, with fresh historically showing a slight edge; ASRM treats both as effective options. Frozen eggs from a bank are cheaper and faster because there is no donor cycle to synchronize, but a cohort is only about 6 to 8 eggs; a fresh cycle usually yields more eggs and more chances at an embryo, at a higher price.
