Embryo genetic testing

How much does PGT testing cost?

Preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) checks IVF embryos for chromosome problems or an inherited condition before transfer. Here is what 60 US fertility clinics post for it on their own websites, piece by piece, each price beside what it covers.

Prices read ยท checked 24 h ago
$1,800โ€“$6,000for a cycle's embryos

60clinics post a price

At the 17 US clinics that post one price for testing a cycle's embryos, PGT costs $1,800 to $6,000; a price that names a number of embryos covers 5 to 15 of them, with more charged per embryo. Where the clinic and the genetics lab bill separately, the clinic's biopsy fee runs $1,200 to $4,000 and the lab charges $195 to $375 per embryo tested. Clinics that post an IVF package both with and without PGT charge $970 to $6,000 more for the version with it (17 clinics). Many insurance plans do not cover it; California and Illinois now require some plans to.

How it is billed

What you pay for, piece by piece

PGT is done by two parties: your clinic's embryology lab takes the biopsy and freezes the embryos, and a genetics lab runs the test. That is why prices are posted in pieces, and why two clinics' numbers often cover different things.

1. The embryo biopsy (your clinic)

An embryologist removes a few cells from each embryo, usually at the blastocyst stage, and the embryos are frozen while the results come back (ACOG). Clinics that post a separate biopsy fee charge $1,200 to $4,000 per cycle (14 clinics), sometimes with an extra fee per embryo past a set number.

2. The genetic test (the genetics lab)

The lab tests the cells: for the number of chromosomes (PGT-A), a specific inherited condition (PGT-M) or a parent's chromosome rearrangement (PGT-SR) (HFEA). Where clinics post the lab's own fee, PGT-A runs $195 to $375 per embryo, often plus shipping.

3. Freezing and a frozen transfer

Tested embryos are now usually frozen and transferred in a later cycle (HFEA), so PGT brings a frozen embryo transfer of about $3,000 to $6,900 and embryo freezing and storage, unless the clinic's package includes them.

4. A setup fee, for PGT-M

Testing for one inherited condition needs a test built for your family first, usually a one-time case preparation or probe fee on top of the per-embryo test. What clinics post for PGT-M.

What each clinic posts for PGT

Read on Oct 9, 2026 on each clinic's own website: 60 clinics post a PGT price, covering 82 clinic locations. Amounts are never averaged or ranked, because one price is the biopsy alone, another the lab's fee per embryo, another testing for up to five embryos.

PGT cost in Washington (5 clinics post a price)

PGT cost in Wisconsin (2 clinics post a price)

A price counts only when the clinic's own website states it as its price. A general figure such as "PGT-A typically costs $3,000 to $6,000" does not, nor does a row that says only "genetic testing" (it could be carrier screening), nor an old price list the site no longer links. A clinic missing here may still offer PGT; ask it for a written quote that names the number of embryos covered.

IVF with PGT

IVF packages with and without PGT

Clinics that post the same IVF package both ways, as each labels and prices them. The difference is the clinic's own two prices; some PGT packages include only the biopsy, with the genetics lab's fee billed on top, and most freeze every embryo instead of a fresh transfer.

Genetics labs

What the genetics labs charge

Most US PGT labs post no price for patients, so their fee reaches you through the clinic's quote. Of the 12 labs we checked, 2 post one, and both sell newer whole-genome or polygenic embryo reports rather than standard PGT-A.

  • Orchid
Preimplantation whole-genome sequencing: $2,500 per embryothe lab's own fee for its standard whole-genome embryo report; the clinic's biopsy is billed separately
  • Nucleus Genomics
Nucleus Embryo: $9,999 per caseanalysis of up to 20 embryos plus genetic tests for both parents, from your own PGT lab's data; it does not biopsy or test embryos itself

Labs that post no patient price: Juno Genetics, CooperSurgical, Igenomix, Natera, Progenesis, Genomic Prediction (LifeView), Ovation, Herasight, Juniper Genomics and Reproductive Genetic Innovations. On screening embryos for polygenic risk scores, ASRM concluded that "this emerging technology is not ready for clinical practice and should not be offered as a reproductive service at this time" (Ethics and Practice Committees on polygenic embryo screening (PGT-P), December 2025).

PGT-M and PGT-SR

Testing for an inherited condition

PGT-M tests embryos for one condition a parent is known to carry, and PGT-SR for a parent's chromosome rearrangement. Unlike routine PGT-A, their medical use is well established.

  • Denver Fertility, PGT-M or PGT-SR analysis: $2,500 to $6,500paid directly to the genetic lab
  • Pozitivf Fertility, PGT-M package: $24,995IVF with PGT-M and PGT-A testing of every viable embryo, medications and the first transfer
  • Reach Fertility, PGT-M case preparation fee: $1,565 one-time feethe clinic's estimate
  • Reach Fertility, PGT-M analysis: $390 per embryothe clinic's estimate; includes PGT-A
  • Reach Fertility, PGT-SR analysis: $365 per embryothe clinic's estimate; includes PGT-A

ACOG: "The clinical utility of preimplantation genetic testing-monogenic and preimplantation genetic testing-structural rearrangements is firmly established; however, the best use of preimplantation genetic testing-aneuploidy remains to be determined." (Preimplantation Genetic Testing, Committee Opinion No. 799, 2020, reaffirmed 2025). Because these tests need IVF even for couples with no fertility problem, ask what the whole cycle costs, not only the test.

Sex selection

PGT for choosing an embryo's sex

The same PGT-A test reports an embryo's sex chromosomes, and some US clinics offer to select by sex for non-medical reasons. Clinics that post a price for it:

  • Bay IVF, Gender selection, added to IVF: $5,400includes embryo biopsy and freezing
  • CNY Fertility, PGT-A for gender selection: $2,000 to $3,000from its gender selection cost table

ASRM Ethics Committee: "Practitioners offering assisted reproductive services are under no ethical obligation to provide or refuse to provide nonmedically-indicated methods of sex selection." (Use of reproductive technology for sex selection for nonmedical reasons, 2022). Clinics set their own policies on it.

Is it worth it

What PGT-A does, and does not, do

PGT-A is the test most IVF patients are offered, and the one whose value is most debated.

The evidence

In the largest randomized trial, 1,212 women aged 20 to 37 with at least three good-quality blastocysts, the cumulative live-birth rate was 77.2% with PGT-A and 81.8% with conventional IVF. Pregnancy loss was 8.7% with PGT-A and 12.6% without it. Source

Insurance

Does insurance cover PGT?

Usually not, but a few states now name it in their fertility coverage laws. Whether your plan must follow a state law also depends on whether your employer self-funds it.

Californiarequired

Large-group health plans must cover preimplantation genetic testing and embryo biopsy as fertility services from January 1, 2026 (SB 729), as listed in the state's guidance to health plans.

Illinoisrequired

Group policies with pregnancy benefits issued or renewed from January 1, 2026 must cover PGT-A, PGT-SR and PGT-M as part of infertility coverage.

Utahnarrow

The state employees' health program must cover IVF and genetic testing for members who, with their partner, carry a trait for cystic fibrosis, spinal muscular atrophy, Morquio syndrome, myotonic dystrophy or sickle cell anemia; the same law has Medicaid seek a federal waiver to do the same.

We also read the fertility coverage laws of Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York and Rhode Island: none names PGT, so whether a plan there pays for it is the plan's own decision. Delaware's law does list embryo biopsy. How to check your own plan.

FAQ

Common questions about PGT cost

How much does PGT-A cost?

At the 17 US clinics that post one price for testing a cycle's embryos, PGT costs $1,800 to $6,000; a price that names a number of embryos covers 5 to 15 of them, with more charged per embryo. Where the clinic and the genetics lab bill separately, the clinic's biopsy fee runs $1,200 to $4,000 and the lab charges $195 to $375 per embryo tested. These are the clinics' own posted prices, read on Oct 9, 2026; they are never averaged, because one price covers the biopsy and the test for five embryos and another covers only the lab's fee for one.

How much does IVF with PGT cost?

Clinics that post an IVF package both with and without PGT charge $970 to $6,000 more for the version with it (17 clinics). Testing also means freezing every embryo and transferring one in a later frozen embryo transfer, which typically costs $3,000 to $6,900 more, unless the clinic's package includes it.

Why do clinics charge PGT in separate pieces?

PGT has two parts done by two parties. The clinic's embryology lab takes a few cells from each embryo (the biopsy) and freezes the embryos, and an outside genetics lab tests the cells. Some clinics post one price for both, others post their biopsy fee and say the genetics lab bills its testing fee directly, often per embryo, plus shipping.

Does insurance cover PGT?

Usually not, and it depends on your plan and your state. California and Illinois now require some plans to cover it: California: Large-group health plans must cover preimplantation genetic testing and embryo biopsy as fertility services from January 1, 2026 (SB 729), as listed in the state's guidance to health plans. Illinois: Group policies with pregnancy benefits issued or renewed from January 1, 2026 must cover PGT-A, PGT-SR and PGT-M as part of infertility coverage. Utah's state employees' plan covers it only for couples who both carry a trait for one of five named conditions. The fertility coverage laws of 10 other states and DC that we read do not name PGT.

Is PGT-A worth the cost?

It depends on what you want it to do. ASRM and SART say: "The value of PGT-A as a routine screening test for all patients undergoing in vitro fertilization has not been demonstrated." In the largest randomized trial, 1,212 women aged 20 to 37 with at least three good-quality blastocysts, the cumulative live-birth rate was 77.2% with PGT-A and 81.8% with conventional IVF. Pregnancy loss was 8.7% with PGT-A and 12.6% without it. The UK regulator rates it red for raising the chance of a baby for most patients and green for lowering the chance of miscarriage.

How much does PGT-M cost?

PGT-M tests embryos for a single inherited condition a parent carries, and usually adds a one-time case setup (probe design) fee to the per-embryo test. Posted examples: Denver Fertility, pgt-m or pgt-sr analysis $2,500 to $6,500; Pozitivf Fertility, pgt-m package $24,995; Reach Fertility, pgt-m case preparation fee $1,565 one-time fee; Reach Fertility, pgt-m analysis $390 per embryo.

IVFcost.co is an informational data platform, not a clinic or medical provider. Prices are what each clinic or lab posted on its own website on Oct 9, 2026; they change, and what a price covers differs from clinic to clinic, so confirm a written quote before you budget. Whether PGT is right for you is a decision to make with your fertility specialist and, for PGT-M, a genetic counselor.
