Does HealthPartners cover IVF?

What HealthPartners (Minnesota, Wisconsin and nearby states) publishes about covering IVF and other fertility treatment, in its own words, with the document each statement is in.

Not on its individual and small employer plans. HealthPartners' 2026 benefit charts for those plans in Minnesota, Wisconsin and South Dakota cover only office visits and consultations to diagnose infertility and say treatment is not covered, listing infertility treatment and procedures, fertility drugs, and egg, sperm or embryo retrieval and storage among what they exclude. Large employer plans have no public chart and can differ: your own plan's documents decide.

Where your plan was bought decides

HealthPartners sells plans bought in Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin, and which coverage criteria apply depends on the state you or your employer bought the plan in.

What decides it

Whether your HealthPartners plan covers IVF

The HealthPartners policy says how it pays for IVF when a plan includes it. Three things decide whether yours does.

  1. 1.Your employer's choice

Most people with HealthPartners coverage get it through work, and the employer picks the benefits. About 50% of employers with 500 or more workers now cover IVF.

  2. 2.Your plan type

A fully-insured plan follows the law of the state it is issued in. A self-funded plan, which 67% of covered US workers have, does not: it covers whatever the employer chose.

  3. 3.Your state's law

Some states require fully-insured plans to cover IVF, some require insurers only to offer it, and most require nothing. Your state's line is below.

What specific employers publish about their fertility benefits, including which insurer or benefit company runs them: companies that cover IVF.

By state

Does HealthPartners cover IVF in your state?

Each state's insurance law applied to a HealthPartners plan issued there. A state law reaches plans issued in that state, usually your employer's state, not where the clinic is.

No state law (5)
  • HealthPartners in Iowa

Not because of state law: Iowa has no law requiring private plans to cover IVF, so IVF under a HealthPartners plan there depends entirely on what the employer chose (or, for a plan you buy yourself, on the plan's own terms). Iowa law and clinics

  • HealthPartners in Minnesota

Not because of state law: Minnesota has no law requiring private plans to cover IVF, so IVF under a HealthPartners plan there depends entirely on what the employer chose (or, for a plan you buy yourself, on the plan's own terms). Minnesota law and clinics

  • HealthPartners in North Dakota

Not because of state law: North Dakota has no law requiring private plans to cover IVF, so IVF under a HealthPartners plan there depends entirely on what the employer chose (or, for a plan you buy yourself, on the plan's own terms). North Dakota law and clinics

  • HealthPartners in South Dakota

Not because of state law: South Dakota has no law requiring private plans to cover IVF, so IVF under a HealthPartners plan there depends entirely on what the employer chose (or, for a plan you buy yourself, on the plan's own terms). South Dakota law and clinics

  • HealthPartners in Wisconsin

Not because of state law: Wisconsin has no law requiring private plans to cover IVF, so IVF under a HealthPartners plan there depends entirely on what the employer chose (or, for a plan you buy yourself, on the plan's own terms). Wisconsin law and clinics

How to see what your HealthPartners plan covers

A policy or program page is a summary. Your own plan's documents are what it pays by.

  1. 1Sign in to your HealthPartners online account to see covered and not-covered services for your plan, as HealthPartners suggests.
  2. 2Read your plan documents for infertility: the individual and small employer charts cover diagnosis only.
  3. 3On a large employer plan, ask HR whether it includes infertility treatment or a fertility benefit.
