Does UPMC Health Plan cover IVF?
What UPMC Health Plan (western and central Pennsylvania) publishes about covering IVF and other fertility treatment, in its own words, with the document each statement is in.

It depends on your plan. UPMC Health Plan's 2026 individual plans exclude assisted fertilization, IVF included, and cover artificial insemination only, along with testing to diagnose infertility. For an employer plan, UPMC says members may obtain infertility treatment under the provisions of their employer's plan; the University of Pittsburgh's plans, for one, have a $10,000 lifetime benefit for procedures and another for drugs. Its 2026 federal employee plan covers IVF within $12,500 a year.

Whether your UPMC Health Plan plan covers IVF
The UPMC Health Plan policy says how it pays for IVF when a plan includes it. Three things decide whether yours does.
- 1.Your employer's choice
Most people with UPMC Health Plan coverage get it through work, and the employer picks the benefits. About 50% of employers with 500 or more workers now cover IVF.
- 2.Your plan type
A fully-insured plan follows the law of the state it is issued in. A self-funded plan, which 67% of covered US workers have, does not: it covers whatever the employer chose.
- 3.Your state's law
Some states require fully-insured plans to cover IVF, some require insurers only to offer it, and most require nothing. Your state's line is below.

Does UPMC Health Plan cover IVF in Pennsylvania?
Pennsylvania's insurance law applied to a UPMC Health Plan plan issued there. A state law reaches plans issued in that state, usually your employer's state, not where the clinic is.
UPMC Health Plan in Pennsylvania
Not because of state law: Pennsylvania has no law requiring private plans to cover IVF, so IVF under a UPMC Health Plan plan there depends entirely on what the employer chose (or, for a plan you buy yourself, on the plan's own terms). Pennsylvania law and clinics

How to see what your UPMC Health Plan plan covers
A policy or program page is a summary. Your own plan's documents are what it pays by.
- 1On a plan through work, read your Certificate of Coverage or ask HR: UPMC says infertility treatment follows the provisions of your employer's plan.
- 2On an individual plan, expect insemination and testing only: IVF is on the list of services not covered.
- 3Call UPMC Health Plan Member Services at 1-888-499-6885 with questions about your infertility coverage, the number its member page prints.
