Does Security Health Plan cover IVF?
What Security Health Plan of Wisconsin (part of Sanford Health) publishes about covering IVF and other fertility treatment, in its own words, with the document each statement is in.

No, on the plans we read. Security Health Plan's 2027 individual and family policy and its 2026 large employer certificate cover tests to diagnose infertility, but not treating it: fertility drugs and assisted reproduction, IVF and GIFT included, are not covered whatever the reason or diagnosis. The State of Wisconsin employee program it offers excludes IVF too. Its self-funded employer plans follow the employer's own plan.

“Assisted reproductive services including but not limited to: o In vitro fertilization (IVF). o Gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT). o And related or similar services, regardless of reason or diagnosis.”
Diagnosis is covered
Services to diagnose infertility, from or under the direction of a provider, are covered.
“Fertility services Covered: Services to diagnose infertility, including professional, hospital and outpatient services received from or under the direction of a provider are covered.”
Excluded in general too
The policy's general exclusions list infertility, meaning all services to restore, enhance or promote fertility, and reversing a sterilization; its drug benefit excludes drugs used for fertility treatment.
“In addition to specific exclusions and limitations identified in the “Member benefits” section and the Schedule of Benefits, coverage provides no benefits for the services listed below.”
“Infertility. (All services related to restoring, enhancing or promoting fertility.)”
“Reversal of sterilization surgery”
“Drugs used for fertility treatment purposes.”
How it defines infertility
Unable to conceive after at least 12 consecutive months of unprotected intercourse, documented by a provider; the policy says infertility is not considered an illness.
“Infertility – The physical inability to conceive after at least 12 consecutive months of unprotected sexual intercourse. This inability must be documented by a provider. Infertility is not considered to be an illness.”
Wisconsin state employees
Security Health Plan offers its SimplyOne network to State of Wisconsin employees, whose 2027 program, the same for every participating plan, excludes IVF, artificial insemination and egg freezing.
“Welcome, State of Wisconsin employees and retirees! When you choose Security Health Plan's SimplyOne network, you'll get access to the one provider that simplifies your path to healthcare: Marshfield Clinic.”
“The services described in this section are specifically not covered by the GHIP.”
“e. Artificial insemination or fertilization methods including, but not limited to, in vivo fertilization, in vitro fertilization, embryo transfer, gamete intra fallopian transfer (GIFT) and similar procedures, and related Hospital, professional and diagnostic services and medications that are incidental to such insemination or fertilization methods.”
Self-funded employer plans
Security Health Plan helps large employers structure self-funded as well as fully insured plans; a self-funded plan's benefits are the employer's.
“For our large employers, we can help structure both self-funded and fully insured plan options that align with your business's healthcare needs while controlling costs.”
Whether your Security Health Plan plan covers IVF
The Security Health Plan policy says how it pays for IVF when a plan includes it. Three things decide whether yours does.
- 1.Your employer's choice
Most people with Security Health Plan coverage get it through work, and the employer picks the benefits. About 50% of employers with 500 or more workers now cover IVF.
- 2.Your plan type
A fully-insured plan follows the law of the state it is issued in. A self-funded plan, which 67% of covered US workers have, does not: it covers whatever the employer chose.
- 3.Your state's law
Some states require fully-insured plans to cover IVF, some require insurers only to offer it, and most require nothing. Your state's line is below.

Does Security Health Plan cover IVF in Wisconsin?
Wisconsin's insurance law applied to a Security Health Plan plan issued there. A state law reaches plans issued in that state, usually your employer's state, not where the clinic is.
Security Health Plan in Wisconsin
Not because of state law: Wisconsin has no law requiring private plans to cover IVF, so IVF under a Security Health Plan plan there depends entirely on what the employer chose (or, for a plan you buy yourself, on the plan's own terms). Wisconsin law and clinics

How to see what your Security Health Plan plan covers
A policy or program page is a summary. Your own plan's documents are what it pays by.
- 1Read your Schedule of Benefits with your policy or certificate: together they make up your coverage.
- 2Call Security Health Plan's Customer Service Department to ask whether a specific service is covered.
- 3On a self-funded employer plan, ask HR whether the employer added fertility benefits.
