Does Blue KC cover IVF?
What Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City (Blue KC) publishes about covering IVF and other fertility treatment, in its own words, with the document each statement is in.

It depends on the plan. Blue KC's 2026 individual and family plan guides list IVF, artificial insemination, ovulation induction and other medical procedures related to infertility as not covered, and its Missouri plans also exclude diagnosing or treating infertility, drugs included. Blue KC publishes no current employer plan documents, and its medical policy says a plan's contract language comes first, so an employer plan's own documents decide.
What Blue KC's plan guides say
Read on Oct 27, 2026. The words in quotation marks are the source's own.
Not on its individual plans; employer plans decide
“In addition, the following services and supplies are NOT covered:”
“In-vitro fertilization, artificial insemination, ovulation induction and other medical procedures related to infertility”
“Although a service may be medically necessary, it may be excluded under a member’s benefit plan.”
Individual and family plans
Its 2026 Blue Metro, Blue Select and rural Preferred-Care Blue EPO guides list IVF, artificial insemination, ovulation induction and other medical procedures related to infertility among the services that are not covered.
“In addition, the following services and supplies are NOT covered:”
“In-vitro fertilization, artificial insemination, ovulation induction and other medical procedures related to infertility”
“In-vitro fertilization, artificial insemination, ovulation induction and other medical procedures related to infertility”
Missouri plans
Its Missouri plans also exclude services to diagnose or treat infertility, drugs included.
“Missouri-Only Exclusions and Limitations • Services related to the diagnosis or treatment (including drugs) of infertility or related conditions”
Contract language comes first
Blue KC's medical policy site says state and federal mandates and plan contract language, exclusions included, take precedence over its medical policies, and that a medically necessary service may still be excluded under a member's benefit plan.
“State and Federal mandates and health plan contract language, including specific provisions/exclusions, take precedence over Medical Policy and must be considered first in determining eligibility for coverage.”
“Although a service may be medically necessary, it may be excluded under a member’s benefit plan.”
Whether your Blue KC plan covers IVF
The Blue KC policy says how it pays for IVF when a plan includes it. Three things decide whether yours does.
- 1.Your employer's choice
Most people with Blue KC coverage get it through work, and the employer picks the benefits. About 50% of employers with 500 or more workers now cover IVF.
- 2.Your plan type
A fully-insured plan follows the law of the state it is issued in. A self-funded plan, which 67% of covered US workers have, does not: it covers whatever the employer chose.
- 3.Your state's law
Some states require fully-insured plans to cover IVF, some require insurers only to offer it, and most require nothing. Your state's line is below.
What specific employers publish about their fertility benefits, including which insurer or benefit company runs them: companies that cover IVF.
Does Blue KC cover IVF in your state?
Each state's insurance law applied to a Blue KC plan issued there. A state law reaches plans issued in that state, usually your employer's state, not where the clinic is.
Blue KC in Kansas
Not because of state law: Kansas has no law requiring private plans to cover IVF, so IVF under a Blue KC plan there depends entirely on what the employer chose (or, for a plan you buy yourself, on the plan's own terms). Kansas law and clinics
Blue KC in Missouri
Not because of state law: Missouri has no law requiring private plans to cover IVF, so IVF under a Blue KC plan there depends entirely on what the employer chose (or, for a plan you buy yourself, on the plan's own terms). Missouri law and clinics

How to see what your Blue KC plan covers
A policy or program page is a summary. Your own plan's documents are what it pays by.
- 1On an individual plan, read the services and supplies that are NOT covered in your plan guide.
- 2On an employer plan, sign in to the member site or ask HR for your certificate: Blue KC's group plan documents are not public.
- 3Ask whether the plan has any infertility benefit before treatment: Blue KC says a medically necessary service can still be excluded by your plan.
